The long wait is over — the Whitney Museum of American Art has finally released the plans for its Renzo Piano-designed downtown expansion. To be situated in New York City's Meatpacking District, the structure calls for a faceted surface that may be chiseled from stone or covered in steel plates; it will abut the High Line public garden. The Whitney has not yet decided what the new building's relationship will be to the museum's original Marcel Breuer building on Madison Avenue. The New York Times' Nicolai Ouroussoff said that Piano's design showed "experimental courage," but still has unresolved issues.
