Puerto Rican street artist Sofia Maldonado wields a wicked brush and an equally fierce attitude about female empowerment. In two current solo shows, one in New York and the other in Amsterdam, she celebrates hip-hop culture with paintings and drawings of what she describes as "concrete jungle divas" and "bling bling chicas."
Capturing female superstars — including Beyoncé, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, J-Lo, and M.I.A. — with lively strokes on canvas, Maldonado presents a colorful combined vision of brains, brawn, and beauty. A gifted muralist who rallies community youth to contribute to the making of public projects and interior installations, Maldonado is as fearless, capable, and resourceful as the women she portrays.

Rock 'n roll has always had its share of musicians who secretly want to be visual artists, and in the world of commercial design, some of the more successful practitioners are those who resemble rock stars. So what better way to satisfy mutual longings than by swapping roles? With that idea in mind, Alternative Press opened its 25th Anniversary Show at LA's Merry Karnowsky Gallery.
The exhibition isn't just about art by rock stars; it also features photographs of musicians and a look back at AP's cultural influence. Still, with works ranging from Shepard Fairey's silkscreened album art to a $30,000 Marilyn Manson watercolor, it's hard to differentiate between the full-time artists and the musicians here.
