The revealing photography of Martin Schoeller
Questioning the notion of beauty, German photographer Martin Schoeller takes pictures of female bodybuilders, whose feminine heads seem grafted to muscular bodies, and close-up portraits of celebrities that show every pore and wrinkle on their famous faces. Following in the tradition of August Sander, Bernd and Hilla Becher, and Thomas Ruff, Schoeller prefers a stark reality to the realm of fiction. The bulging muscles and sculptural forms of his female bodybuilders are surreal, while the sagging chins and flawed skin of Clint Eastwood, Chris Rock, Paris Hilton, Kobe Bryant, Sarah Palin, Dennis Hopper, and other boldface names show that even the stars are less than perfect.

Congolese dandies make fashion a religion
Making fashion a religion, Congolese dandies have created a subculture that considers the possession of status symbols the pinnacle of success. Known locally as Sapeurs, men of all ages flaunt designer fashions even if they really can't afford them. There are strict rules of dress for Sapeurs: three colors are the maximum for an outfit and the status of style is increased by accessories, such as cigars, pipes, ties, glasses, and walking sticks. Over the course of several years, Italian photographer Daniele Tamagni documented the colorful dandies of Bacongo, a district of Brazzaville in the Congo, which is considered the birthplace of SAPE, the religion of style.
