World famous as Star Trek's Mr. Spock, Leonard Nimoy has numerous lesser-known talents that go beyond acting. As a photographer who studied with the late, great Robert Heinecken in the 1970s, Nimoy has made portraits, still-lifes, landscapes, and nudes. In 2007, he asked the people of Northampton, Massachusetts to share their secret selves with him, which led to more than 100 participants — ranging from sailors and CEOs to editors and teachers — dressing up as wizards, superheroes, mad scientists, and starlets to fulfill their inner fantasies.

In a sketchbook note from the early '60s, Jasper Johns wrote, "Take an object, do something to it. Do something else to it." It wasn't a totally new idea in art, but when considered in the development of postmodernism and 21st-century art, that simple statement had a profound effect. Studying the visual terrain, Inspired curator Beth Rudin DeWoody not only saw examples of this theory in use, but also realized the opportunity to motivate artists working with photography to use iconic images as their point of departure.
